You Locked Your Doors

Things You will Never do in Heaven, Part 2

Introduction

Those of us who are in our 50s and older remember the bygone era of small town living in the 70s, when you could leave your house unlocked to visit your neighbors next door or just to head down to the corner store to pick up some odds and ends.

Today, in the 21st Century, the crime rate is too high to want to risk leaving your house without locking your doors. Even home invasions are a huge problem which someone simply breaks into your home to take your life rather than your possessions.

Fortunately, in Heaven, that will no longer necessary. No fear of home invasions or theft.

The Purpose of a House

Sometimes we take for granted as to why we live in a house. Yes, there are those who in in an apartment, condo, or trailer; but the purpose of this article, we will refer to it as a house.

A place to lay our head—This is where we come to rest from the day’s events. Whether we went to work, school, or some social event; we look forward to coming home and relaxing.

A place for our stuff—One of the main reasons we have a house is to put all of our stuff in. From clothes, furniture, and food; to knick knacks, mementoes, and other items we cherish.

A place to be found—We have a house so friends, family and loved ones can find us. The address is used for our mail, packages, and (unfortunately) our bills.

A base of operations—We do all of our non-world activities here. What I mean is meals, showers, entertainment, and general preparation for the next day or week.

A place of protection—The roof over our heads and the four walls helps protect us from the elements of nature and robbers and thieves. This is why we have locks on the doors and windows.

All of these things, and others, are why a house is necessary. And that’s the main purpose for locking our doors; keeping us, our family, and our possessions safe from the outside world.

No Locks or Houses in Heaven

In 2 Corinthians 5:1 the apostle Paul writes, For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Our goal, in this life, is to strive for the eternal home in Heaven where no locks are needed, and no house is necessary. We can go to and fro without the fear of molestation or confrontation of any kind.

The writer of Hebrews adds, Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear (Hebrews 12:28). This is a permanent residence and cannot, nor will not, be destroyed. Everything that is physical, here on earth, will be burned up in the last day (2 Pet. 3:10).

What about the “Many Mansions” in John 14:2?

There are those who believe that Jesus is building us mansions to live in when we get to heaven. He speaks about this in the first four verses of John 14, “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. "And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

The idea of mansions, in general, shows favoritism to people. There’s a website online that talks about the various type of mansions people will get depending on their service to the Lord here on earth. The more they do, the bigger and better the mansion. If God doesn’t show partiality here on earth (Acts 10:34), then why would He show partiality in Heaven?

Paul wrote in Galatians 3:28, There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. This means we are unified in Christ. No one gets any preeminence in the church because of background, ethnicity, or social status. The same applies to heaven. We’re all on equal footing there as well.

Conclusion

We’ll continue to lock our doors and enjoy the homes that we have. But we’ll look forward to that heavenly home that will be ours for eternity.
