The Devil Used Scripture

Image
Introduction In Matthew chapter 4:1-11, Jesus was tempted three times by the devil. Each time He was tempted, Jesus referred to scripture to combat the temptation. He would start by saying, “It is written…” However, the devil, himself, used scripture! After his first failure; and Jesus referring to scripture, the devil, made his second appeal to Jesus by quoting scripture himself. In verses 5-7, it is written, Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’” Some might be surprised that Satan would use scripture but that’s why he is so cunning and deceitful. It continues on even today!   Misquoting Scripture The Devil’s scr...

Ministers of Satan

Image
Introduction When you read this phrase, “Ministers of Satan” what comes to mind? Men in long, black robes walking around a pentagram on the floor chanting some ungodly statement. Or perhaps one who is wearing a large goat mask who brandishes a long-bladed sacrificial knife. What if I were to tell you that a minister of Satan is actually the local preacher who has a bible in his hand, every Sunday, and professes the name of God? That sounds like an oxymoron but there is more truth to it than you think. The standard definition of Satan Everyone is familiar the individual known as Satan. He challenged God in regards to Job (1:6-12; 2:1-7) and He tempted Jesus in the wilderness (Mt. 4:1-11); just to name a couple examples. This is a general term for Satan as well. Here’s the definition from Easton’s Bible Dictionary… Satan adversary; accuser. When used as a proper name, the Hebrew word so rendered has the article "the adversary", Job...

The B-I-B-L-E, et al.

Image
(from 2007) Introduction A very well-known song that is sung by children has these lyrics: “ The B I B L E, Yes, that’s the book for me. I stand alone On the Word of God The B I B L E!” Now suppose this song is taught by a Mormon parent to their child. The song might look like this:             “ I stand alone on the Word of God, and the Book of Mormon, and Doctrines and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price, and Words of Wisdom, and the History of the Church; The B I B L E!” I Stand Alone What exactly does it mean to “Stand alone on the Word of God”? The answer is simple. You accept the Bible as the Words of God, the teachings of Jesus Christ, and you have no need for anything else. You forsake all other doctrines. The apostle Paul wrote to Timothy concerning this, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, ...

What is a Christian?

Image
(from 2005) Introduction Ask several people what is a Christian and you might get several answers. The primary reason is that most people think that if you attend church that makes you a Christian, while others will say that if you believe in God and Jesus, that makes you a Christian. As Found in the Bible         The word, ‘Christian’ is only used three times in scripture (Acts 11:26; 26:18; 1 Pet. 4:16). It is referenced to those who were/are followers of Christ. The Sanhedrin wrongfully referred to it as a denomination of Judaism; calling it a sect of the Nazarenes (Acts 24:5) Paul defends the faith by saying it is referred to as The Way (Acts 24:14; 9:2; Jn. 14:6) and is separate and apart from Judaism.         Christians are to be separate and apart from ALL denominations (2 Cor. 6:17; 1 Cor. 1:10; 1 Cor. 4:6). No true New Testament Christian would align themselves with any man-made ins...
