The Siblings of Jesus

Image
Introduction To grow up as an only child can be rough as the child has no one to relate to for brothers and sisters. Sometimes parents will over-compensate this singleness by showering the child with more material gifts than is necessary. Children grow up with friends and extended family; but to have siblings, who live in the same house as you, are a priceless treasure. Jesus had brothers and sisters that he grew up with in his household contrary to what certain religious beliefs say on the subject. Born of a Virgin It’s no secret that Jesus was born of a virgin woman. Both OT and NT confirm this. In Isaiah 7:14, Then he said, “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.” Some, incorrectly, interpret ‘virgin’ as ‘young girl’. There is no proof that Mary was a young girl so we have to conclude that it means, ‘she didn’t know a man’; know in the carnal sense. In Mt. 1:18-2

Leaving an Example

Image
Introduction Humans learn by example; repeat what they hear and copy what they see. That’s why it’s important for parents to set the standard for their children by being a good example so that when they copy what they see and repeat what they hear, we’ll know that we’ve done well to mold them as future adults. However, not all parents leave a good example. They want what’s best for their children; even to give them better than what they, as children, had. Yet, they fall into a routine and not give heed to what is said and done around their own children. Two Examples I’ve Observed When I worked in a grocery store several years ago, I witnessed the aftermath of a child; around 8-years-old, attempt to steal a magazine. The mother was profusely apologizing to the manager that he was only 8 and didn’t know what he was doing. I was thinking, ‘Really? He wouldn’t know what stealing was unless he saw someone else do it.’ Then again, I could have been wrong. An

The Gospel according to Pop Culture

Introduction I sometimes wonder how it is that preachers run out of material from the bible that they have to resort to other sources of information to keep the interest going in their local congregation. Just preaching on a Psalm a week would give you almost half a year’s material with 150 Psalms! In addition, you could dig further into the Psalms and create even more sermons. But for some preachers, the bible just isn’t enough as they feel that you can only talk about Jesus and disciples for so long that people would get bored. Is it possible? Yes! Should you seek outsides sources? NO! Now Playing at a church near You Once a week, whenever I pass by this church on my way to work, I like to read the title of the upcoming sermon that are going to have. It’s a denominational church but, it’s amusing to see the titles and wonder what they will talk about in regards to the subject. During the summer of ’98 I was caught off guard by a couple of titles. The

What’s Wrong with...Women Preachers?

Image
Introduction Since the late 20 th Century we find female preachers becoming more frequent in the religious world. If it were to be challenged by someone, the phrase “Women can do it too”, or “Equal Rights for Women” might be used in answer to these challenges. I am not saying that women aren’t capable of preaching, nor am I saying that they cannot teach. But if you want to do what’s right, we have to consult God’s Will and that is found in his scriptures. Order of Authority Let’s establish the order of authority to see where a woman is placed in rank. The apostle Paul writes of this in 1 Corinthians 11:3, But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. From this verse, we see that God is first, followed by Christ, then man, and finally; woman. This order goes all the way back to the beginning; God (Gen. 1:1), Christ (Gen. 1:26; Jn. 1:1-3), Man (Gen. 2:7), and Woman (Gen. 2:18, 21-23). T
