The Man who Died Upon the Cross

Image
Poem written by Christopher Mentzer    Christ was born in a stable; That Day, in history, is lost. But for true education; To speak of your salvation, From the man who died upon the cross.   A child in a manger; Is innocent as you can see. He’s the King of Kings, With a shout, ‘Hosanna’, rings. A remission of sins in the man it will be.   Wise men came from afar, Bearing gifts to the young juvenile. But the gift He made, Is the life He gave, Upon the cross for every man, woman, and child.   Born of the House of David; The tribe of Judah is his lineage. The last of his ancestry, He completed his ministry, On the cross he said, “It is finished.”   To celebrate His birth is to no avail, It is counted naught but dross. But your edification, And eternal salvation, Comes from the man who died upon the cross.

How Much Time is Left?

Image
Introduction When someone asks how many days are left in the month, or year, you can go to a calendar and figure it out. The same with upcoming holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, or other events. But when someone asks, “How many days until Jesus returns?” then you can’t go to the calendar. The same if someone asks how many days do you have left to live. You hope you can’t figure that out on a calendar. But in the long run, everyone has the same amount of time.   This website is defunct. What’s Wrong with Date Setting? Ever since Christ’s ascension back into Heaven (Acts 1:9; Dan. 7:31), people have attempted to predict His return in the Second Coming (1 Thess. 4:16). An example of this in history is as follows: People thought Christ would return on January 1, 1000. From the Library of Date Setting… This year goes down as one of the most pronounced states of hysteria over the return of Christ. All members of society seemed affected by the prediction that Jesus was

Be Content with what you have

Introduction In Proverbs 30:8-9 Solomon writes, Remove falsehood and lies far from me; Give me neither poverty nor riches-Feed me with the food allotted to me; Lest I be full and deny You, and say, "Who is the LORD?" Or lest I be poor and steal, and profane the name of my God. In other words, be thankful of the things you have and appreciate that you have enough. Those who have more than they need will forget that it was God who gave them that abundance.   Keeping up with The Jones’ There are often times when someone is jealous of others because they have more than themselves. Or, it’s a matter of what they have seems nicer or better than their own. When this happens, it becomes a case of one-upmanship with their neighbor. They get a new family car; you get a sports car. They get a new motorbike; you get a boat. And so on. In the world of religion, the same thing could happen. Two of their four children are Christians; You have three of your children converted.

Why Is that Congregation Different?

Image
Introduction A statement I once made holds the truth to Christians and the Church; All Christians assemble as the church of Christ, but not all churches of Christ are Christians. It seems confusing at first but once you dissect it, you’ll understand better. In our previous article, we discussed how the church of Christ is not a denomination; that it goes to the original source, the bible, for guidance. Here, we see where some churches of Christ lean away from scripture and chase after denominational trappings.   Why have you done this? In the book of Judges, the children of Israel began to go in their own direction of what God told them to do. Here’s the key passage: Judges 2:1-2, Then the Angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said: “I led you up from Egypt and brought you to the land of which I swore to your fathers; and I said, 'I will never break My covenant with you. 'And you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear

Guest Article-- Time Marches On

By Joe R. Price The sky did not fall on Election Day. It did not fall the next day, or the day after that. Your candidate may or may not have won. You may not know yet whether your candidate has won. Your cause may have been approved at the ballot box. It may have been rejected. Whatever the outcomes, do not despair. The earth remains until the Lord comes (Gen. 8:22; 2 Pet. 3:10-12). Until then, the sun will rise tomorrow. The gospel embeds an eternal perspective into Christians’ hearts, preparing us for eternity as we walk the winding, uneven road of life (2 Cor. 4:16-18). Until the Lord comes, Christians continue to pray.  About everything (Phil. 4:6). Without ceasing (1 Thess. 5:17). Without being discouraged (Lk. 18:1). For all people, including those with authority over our lives (1 Tim. 2:1-2). Until the Lord comes, Christians continue to work . Always abounding (1 Cor. 15:58). Because it is day and the night is coming (Jno. 9:4). Because there is a harvest, and laborers are few

God is Still in Control

Image
Introduction Every four years, just like the Olympics and Leap-a-year, we have a presidential election to elect the individual who will run the country of the United States next. Obviously, everyone wants their candidate to win as opposed to the other. Arguments ensue; including name calling, threats, and; most recently, riots. While the president changes from time to time, there is one thing that is, and always has been, unchanging; God is still in control of the planet and Jesus, His Son, is still sitting on His Throne! As the Hebrew writer pens, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever . (Hebrews 13:8)   #NotMyPresident If you will allow me to get on my political soapbox for a just a moment, I’d like to take you back to January, 2017 and the inauguration of the 45 th President of the United States. His nomination was met with sniggers, his campaign was considered a joke, and, when was elected, he was greeted by extreme hatred. The phrase, “Not My Presi

When is The Alien Sinner Saved?

Image
Introduction Salvation is the most important aspect of the gospel as it makes us right with God and sets us on a path to heaven. However, when talking to different people about when one is saved, you’re going to get different answers. The alien sinner is one who hasn’t heard the gospel and has, therefore, alienated himself from God by his sin. This also includes those who are of the denominations. They’ll tell you that they are Christians; according to the bible, but if you talk with them long enough, you’ll see that their life does not conform to scripture. Below we have examples of those who say they are Christians and when they have become saved. There is also the example from scripture itself.   When You Say the Sinner’s Prayer This is one of the more frequent answers that people will give; usually after you “accept Jesus into your heart.” An example of this prayer is… "Jesus, I believe that you are the holy Son of God. I believe that you died on the cross fo

The Americanized Christian

Image
Introduction Have you ever heard someone say, usually when things aren’t positive, that “God has a plan for you”? The idea is that even though things are in their darkest moment, God will turn it around for you. You’ll come out of this negativity as a stronger individual than you went in. Most of the time this is true; even if you aren’t a believer in God. However, this type of thing is uttered by those here in America making things seem so much easier. There is the issue at hand; when being a Christian in America takes the forefront for all things.   I Have a Plan for You! If you look at scripture, God did indeed say something like this. In Jeremiah 29:11, For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. (RSV) You might find this verse used in a greeting card given to someone who just graduated, got married, received a promotion, or some other event. This is where people get that Monty Hall atti

Is the Church of Christ a Denomination?

Image
Introduction Continuing from our previous article, The Name of the Church , we come into a subject that brings about a bit of confusion for those looking for a congregation to assemble with. Since we have identified ourselves as the church of Christ, we have thus been labelled a denomination. The question is are we a denomination?   Dictionary Definitions Let’s begin by looking at the definitions of the words; denomination and sect. Denomination: [ Webster’s Dictionary (1913) ] 3. A class, or society of individuals, called by the same name; a sect; as, a denomination of Christians. Sect: [ Webster’s Dictionary (1913) ] 2. …in religion, the believers in a particular creed, or upholders of a particular practice; especially, in modern time, a party dissenting from an established church; a denomination. [ Int’l. Standard Bible Encycl .]   The word is applied to schools of philosophy; to the Pharisees and Sadducees among the Jews who adhered to a common religious faith

The Name of the Church

Image
Introduction Have you ever looked up at the moon at night and wondered why it doesn’t have a name? Moons of the other planets have names but ours doesn’t. It’s just known simply as The Moon. The reason for this is that when you have one of something, you don’t need to name it because you’re not separating it from others. Just like the church that Jesus built (Mt. 16:18). The questions to ask are, if Jesus only built one church, which one is it and what is it called?   One of Something When you only have one of something, you don’t need to give it more of a name that when the item is. As stated, we only have one moon so it doesn’t need a proper name. It’s the same with the church. Let’s look at Matthew 16:18, in which Jesus says, “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” Jesus say that he would build, “my church” which indicates he only built one. Since he built one then it d
