Everlasting Too Late

Image
Introduction Throughout most of this year (2022), we’ve been looking at the subject of the afterlife. Everything from where we go when this life is over, to the judgment scene, and things you will never do in Heaven. One of the harsh realities that people overlook is that when this life is over, your destination is for all of eternity. If you think you know where you’re headed, I urge you to compare your life to scripture and see it if lines up. Remember this important verse,  And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment   (Heb. 9:27)   I’m Heavenbound! Too many people assume that they will automatically go to Heaven as they have lived a reasonably good life. They might have attended church services faithfully every week; even donated to local charities and was kind to strangers in passing. But is this enough? The answer is no. The apostle Paul writes, As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one; There is none who understands; T

What about the 120 from Acts 1?

Introduction In this final article on the study on miracles, we’re going to look at one of the reasons why so many people think that miracles are still happening even today. It’s a charismatic movement that involves those present in Acts chapter 1.   First, Let’s Review Before we touch on this subject, let’s review what we’ve previously learned. As we saw in the previous studies, the power of the Holy Spirit was given only two ways. First, it was through the Baptism of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:2-3; 10:44-45). Second, it was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands (Acts 8:14-15; 2 Tim. 1:6). Since there are no apostles living today, then we can conclude that no one can receive the power of the Holy Spirit that way. And, since the bible is complete (1 Cor. 8:10; Jas. 1:25), we can conclude that the Holy Spirit isn’t baptizing anyone either. As the apostle Paul stated, Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongu

Closed for Christmas?

Image
Introduction The 25 th of December falls on Sunday this year (2022) as it also did in 2011 and 2016. And, with that, thousands of churches will be closed this Sunday! Some might ask why is that a concern? “After all, they are plenty of services the day before, on Christmas Eve.” But is it really that important? Let’s see what the bible has to say.   The Birth of Christ Although the birth of our Lord and Savior is an important event to talk about; one that’s even prophesized about (Isa. 9:6; Micah 5:2), the scriptures do not give us a specific date as to when He was born. We should conclude then that His birth is not that significant to celebrate in a yearly fashion. Most of us have a birth certificate, hospital record, and/or relatives that can tell us exactly when we were born; even right down to the time of the delivery. With this in mind, we are able to celebrate our birth every year that that day rolls around. For Jesus, however, no mention of a date is given. As

Negative Miracles

Image
Gehazi's Scheme by Martin's Bible Cartoons   Introduction For the past couple of months, we’ve been studying the subject of miracles. Most people’s concepts of miracles are that all miracles had a positive result: Making the blind see, the deaf hear, the lame walk, raising the dead, etc. However, there are a handful of miracles which had a negative connotation to it and this article will focus on those. You will see that although negative, they still have a positive teaching to it.   Negative Miracles in the Old Testament Ten Plagues— (Ex. 7-11) Most bible students, even the casual ones, know the story of Moses and the 10 Plagues. These were all negative miracles in that they caused havoc, destruction, and death among the Egyptian people. The purpose of these plagues was to prove that there is only One True God and those of Egypt were false gods. Each plague was a challenge to the Egyptian Gods and they proved false as they couldn’t counteract the plagues. Korah

The Lame Man from Acts 3

Image
Miracles without faith, Conclusion   Introduction One of the more unique ways that we can show decency to the human race is by performing a random act of kindness. Hand out a gift card from a fast-food restaurant to someone looking for money for food, compliment a complete stranger on the shirt that they are wearing, or simply lend a listening ear to someone who needs to vent. In the New Testament, a beggar got more than he bargained for when Peter and John approached him on the way in to the temple. This, of course, was more than a random act of kindness, but it showed the true spirit of being a disciple of Christ.   Lame for 40 Years We meet this man in Acts 3 and he’s described as follows, in verse 2, And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms from those who entered the temple. But it’s not until Acts 4:22, that we learn that this lame man was over 40 years of a

Santa Claus Vs. God

Image
Introduction As we head further into December, the thoughts of the Christmas season and the figure of Santa Claus becomes prevalent in people’s life. However, parents have a tendency to increase the abilities of Santa to Godlike proportions. On the flipside, some religious people see God as a Santa Claus when they are physically blessed with material goods and health. In this article, we’ll explore both sides of the same coin.   Is Santa Claus God? While some will deny they don’t see Santa as Godlike, you should be familiar with these lyrics from a well-known song: He sees you when you’re sleeping, He knows when you’re awake, He knows if you’ve been bad or good, So be good for goodness’ sake. First and foremost, do not lie to your children that Santa Claus is real. Just because it’s a holiday tradition does not make it acceptable to lie to them. Because once the truth is found out, and they will find out, you have no idea how it might scar them mentally. If

The Bones of Elisha

Image
Miracles without Faith, part 4   Introduction I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, “Dead men tell no tales”. The idea behind it is that a person takes their secrets to the grave. But suppose one who is dead still has powers in this world? Miraculous powers! An interesting event took place revolving around the Elisha the Prophet.   Brief History of Elisha the Prophet One of the challenges of God’s prophets was to stand for the truth and be willing to defend it to the death. Elijah, however, had a moment of distrust when his life hung in the balance following the Mount Carmel victory (1 Kg. 18:19ff). God finds him in a cave and tells him, “Go, return on your way to the Wilderness of Damascus; and when you arrive, anoint Hazael as king over Syria. Also you shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi as king over Israel. And Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place.” (1 Kings 19:15-16) He also tells him that He has reserved 7,000 in Israel

The Power of God to Salvation

Image
Introduction If you’ve been following my article series, on miracles, posted on Mondays, you’ll notice that one of the verses I focus a lot on is Romans 1:16, which the apostle Paul writes, For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. In this article, I want to focus on the latter part of this verse; for the Jew first and also for the Greek. The word Greek is being used to refer to everyone who wasn’t a Jew. In other words, Gentiles.   For the Jew First… The Israelites were God’s chosen people as far back as Exodus when He established His covenant with them at Mount Horeb. Even when He had them carried away in Babylonian captivity, He assured them that they would return to the land (Jeremiah 29:10). In the New Testament, Jesus sent the seventy out on the limited commission and told them, “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samar
