You Took some Medicine

Image
Things You will Never do in Heaven, Part 4   Introduction The concept of medication has come a long way since the 19 th Century and earlier. People were sometimes using one type of medicine to cure numerous ailments. It wasn’t until the late 20s that penicillin was discovered and early 1940s before it was mass produced. Today, there are pills and syrups for almost all illnesses out there; in addition to aids for insomnia, relaxation, headaches, and staying alert. All of these pills, liquids, and concoctions will be a mere memory after the Second Coming of Christ. As John writes in Revelation 21:4, “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”   Lifelong Illness There are those illnesses and diseases that are such that even medicine won’t cure. Perhaps it might slow it down but never reducing it or causing it to cease complete...

You Visited a Sick Person

Image
Things You will Never do in Heaven, Part 3   Introduction When a family member or friend gets sick, you will make the effort to go visit them to make sure they are doing all right. You might run errands for them, do some chores around the house, or anything that might help them along while they are getting better. One of the many advantages of Heaven is that there won’t be any more sickness or disease. We’ll be completely freed from those types of mortal drawbacks.   Refreshing the brethren We see many examples of disciples visiting one another or concerned for each other. Tabitha was a woman who served her local brethren faithfully (Acts 9:36) that, when she died, all the widows implored Peter to come right away (vs. 38). Upon his arrival, they showed the tunics and garments that she made while she was alive (vs. 39). She was the kind of disciple that refreshed others and was still in need. She was raised from the dead by Peter (vs. 40-41). In Paul’s second le...

What is The Church?

Image
Introduction In the religious world, there are many people who claim to be Christians, but have no interest in attending worship or, as they say, “going to church”. They say that church is an invention of man and it’s too organized. Some have even gone so far as to say that the church is nothing. We’ll address both of these comments.   An Invention of Man? It’s no surprise that people would state that the church is an invention of man. If you look at the religious landscape today, I would almost whole-heartedly agree on that statement. Almost. Before someone thinks that I’ve lost my mind, let me qualify that my response. Over the last four decades or so, the concept of Megachurches, Community churches, and Outreach Life Centers have overrun the world of religion that one cannot see the forest through the trees. People complain that standard churches are too stuffy and they a more relaxed atmosphere. Less organ music, more band-style music, less preachi...

You Locked Your Doors

Image
Things You will Never do in Heaven, Part 2   Introduction Those of us who are in our 50s and older remember the bygone era of small town living in the 70s, when you could leave your house unlocked to visit your neighbors next door or just to head down to the corner store to pick up some odds and ends. Today, in the 21 st Century, the crime rate is too high to want to risk leaving your house without locking your doors. Even home invasions are a huge problem which someone simply breaks into your home to take your life rather than your possessions. Fortunately, in Heaven, that will no longer necessary. No fear of home invasions or theft.   The Purpose of a House Sometimes we take for granted as to why we live in a house. Yes, there are those who in in an apartment, condo, or trailer; but the purpose of this article, we will refer to it as a house. A place to lay our head— This is where we come to rest from the day’s events. Whether we went to work, schoo...

God Sent Me!

Image
Introduction In Matthew 26, Jesus is in a home in Bethany when a woman enters and pours fragrant oil over his head. The reaction, to this, is found in verses 8-11, But when His disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? For this fragrant oil might have been sold for much and given to the poor.” But when Jesus was aware of it, He said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a good work for Me. For you have the poor with you always, but Me you do not have always.” It's disheartening to read Jesus’ statement in verse 11 when he says, For you have the poor with you always . It’s still true today; here in 2022. Regardless of who’s running the country, there are still people in need. However, not all are really incapable of employment. They just prefer tax-free money. While others, play the “sympathy” card with a wrong motive.   Con artists People feel a sense of guilt when they see someone holding a sign begging money f...

You Turned on a Light Switch

Image
Things You Will Never Do in Heaven Part 1   Introduction Since the invention of electricity and the light bulb, people; day in and day out, flip the switch to turn a light on or turn it off. 95% we won’t give it a second thought until the power goes out. Then we light candles or battery-operated flashlights or lanterns and wonder how people survived without electricity. Naturally, when the power comes back on, we’ll say a silent prayer of thanks and continues our lives as if nothing happened. In heaven, we won’t have to turn on a light on…ever.   Jesus is Our Light In John 8:12, it is written, Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” In this dim, dark world of sin we know that we shall never walk in darkness as long as we look to Jesus to guide the way. As the apostle John wrote in 1 John 1:5-7, This is the message which we have heard from Him and d...

Things You will Never do in Heaven

An Afterlife Article Series   Introduction Since the beginning of this year (2022), we’ve been looking at a variety of subjects that has to do with the afterlife. We looked at “ Bound for Eternity ” in which we show that there is an afterlife and what takes place on the way. We also looked at the Judgment Day and what you won’t find there. In this series of articles, we’ll look at Heaven, itself, and the things that you won’t do anymore.   I’m Not Comfortable with this Title This series of articles is from a sermon I originally preached in 2012. One of the reasons I turn sermons into articles is to expand each point and go into more depth as an independent subject. When I set up for preaching the lesson, I hooked up my laptop to the church’s projector so everyone can see my PowerPoint program as I usually will put scripture up on the screen to point out specific verses. One of our members, at that time, came up to me, before the service, when she saw ...

The Devil Used Scripture

Image
Introduction In Matthew chapter 4:1-11, Jesus was tempted three times by the devil. Each time He was tempted, Jesus referred to scripture to combat the temptation. He would start by saying, “It is written…” However, the devil, himself, used scripture! After his first failure; and Jesus referring to scripture, the devil, made his second appeal to Jesus by quoting scripture himself. In verses 5-7, it is written, Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’” Some might be surprised that Satan would use scripture but that’s why he is so cunning and deceitful. It continues on even today!   Misquoting Scripture The Devil’s scr...
