Everlasting Too Late

 Introduction

Throughout most of this year (2022), we’ve been looking at the subject of the afterlife. Everything from where we go when this life is over, to the judgment scene, and things you will never do in Heaven.

One of the harsh realities that people overlook is that when this life is over, your destination is for all of eternity. If you think you know where you’re headed, I urge you to compare your life to scripture and see it if lines up. Remember this important verse, And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment (Heb. 9:27)

I’m Heavenbound!

Too many people assume that they will automatically go to Heaven as they have lived a reasonably good life. They might have attended church services faithfully every week; even donated to local charities and was kind to strangers in passing. But is this enough? The answer is no.

The apostle Paul writes, As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one; There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.” (Romans 3:10-12)

Since sin has entered this world, no one can consider themselves “a good person”. Paul goes on to say, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Some who read this, get a ‘heavenly’ attitude and say, “Yes, we’re all sinners, but we’re also forgiven by God.”

In other words, they see this as a blanket statement. Let’s make this verse more personal, for Chris Mentzer has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Putting my own name in this verse, as everyone should, makes it more personal and more meaningful. This should make us all uncomfortable that we are sinners and deserve the punishment of Hell.

Obedience Must Come First!

This is the part, in the religious world, that the majority of the people overlook. Jesus couldn’t have said it any clearer, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’” (Matthew 7:21-23)

This is aimed at, primarily, those who say belief is all you need to be saved. Jesus never said that! Look at the first verse of this passage, ‘He who DOES the will of My Father in heaven.’ Does is an action word meaning that something must be done to be saved. This is why people continue to struggle with the idea of baptism for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38).

Time is Running Out!

To tell someone that time is running out sounds dramatic, but we are, after all, talking about your soul and the outcome of where you will spend your eternity. This is why we offer the invitation at the end of each service to allow people to: make a public confession and repent of sins; to, either be restored as a Christian, or start out a new life as a Christian.

When a person dies, their fate is seal forever. Jesus said, “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work” (John 9:4). For a better understanding of this verse, please read my article, See You Tomorrow.

James has to this say about time running out, Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” (James 4:13-15)

Conclusion

One day, it will be everlasting too late to make your decision concerning your eternal destination. If you’re not sure, doublecheck the scriptures to see how your life matches. Jesus said, “He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him--the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.” (John 12:48)

Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 6:2 …Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. Don’t put off for tomorrow what you can do today. You may not get a tomorrow and then, it will be everlasting too late.
