There are No Material Possessions

Things Not Found on Judgment Day, Part 4

Introduction

A tough case was being argued in court. The defense attorney, feeling that he was in trouble, sent the judge a bottle of hundred-year-old brandy.

The defendant was fit to be tied.

“The judge will kill me,” he said. “Trying to bribe him; we’re dead.”

“I don’t think so,” his attorney told him, “I sent it in the other lawyer’s name!”

You Can’t Take it with You

In ancient Egypt, Pharaohs were buried with luxurious items such as gold, jewelry, family heirlooms, paintings, and even a chariot. It was said that they would need these items in the afterlife.

In the more modern times, people are buried with sentimental items that meant something to the individual. For example, actor Bela Lugosi; known for his role as Count Dracula was buried in his Dracula cape. Princess Diana was buried with a set of rosary beads given to her by Mother Theresa.

There are, others, who are buried with their fortunes; money mostly, but as the scriptures state, you can’t take it with you. Okay, it doesn’t say that exactly, but Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 6:7, For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

Even Job knew that material possessions was temporary. In the first chapter of that book, all of his possessions were destroyed; including his livestock and children. The outcome is seen in verse 20-22, Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped. And he said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD." In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong.

You Can’t Bribe the Judge!

On the Day of Judgment, it’s just you and the judge; our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ. Everything that you have done in this life will be brought to examination (2 Cor. 5:10). Nothing is hidden from Him (Eccl. 12:14; Heb. 4:12).

Without material possessions, you cannot bribe the judge to curry favor with Him before He passes judgement. This is assured in 2 Chronicles 19:7, “Now therefore, let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take care and do it, for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, no partiality, nor taking of bribes.”

Jesus is a fair, righteous, and true judge. He will not show partiality to anyone. Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality” (Acts 10:34). For there is no partiality with God (Romans 2:11).

Conclusion

In this mortal world, you may “get away” with every crime or dishonest act that you have committed. You may never serve a single hour of jail time or community service.

However, on the final Judgment Day, everything will come to light to the ultimate judge and you will not avoid condemnation. As the apostle Paul writes, But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality (Colossians 3:25).
