My God is better than Your God
Introduction
Some people who identify themselves as Christians talk
about having a personal relationship with God. Some to the point of them
referring to Him as “My God”. This is fine until someone gets too personal and changes
things in scripture to suit themselves.
In Genesis 1:26-27 it reads, Then
God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let
them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and
over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps
on the earth." So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He
created him; male and female He created them. God created us but the way some people talk, they act
as if they are the ones who created God.
Social Drinking
“My God won’t mind if I have a glass of wine with
dinner.” These people understand the scriptures that say drunkenness is a sin
(Rom. 13:13; Gal. 5:21). Therefore, a drink here and there is fine. The author
of Proverbs tells a different story in Prov. 23:31-32, Do
not look on the wine when it is red, When it sparkles in the cup, When it
swirls around smoothly; At the last it bites like a serpent, And stings like a
viper. This
says don’t touch alcohol at all! Going to the New Testament; in addition to
drunkenness, the phrase drinking parties (or banquetings) is used as well as an
act of sin. This is in reference to social drinking. So, yes, it is a sin!
Worshipping God
“My God doesn’t care how I worship him; as long as I
do.” We’ve previously gone over this in a series on the worship service (see
previous posts). If this statement was true, then why were Nadab and Abihu
killed when they offered incense to God (Lev. 10:1-2)? The offered what was
called ‘profane fire’ as it wasn’t from the source God commanded. God told
Aaron in verse 3, “By those who come near Me I must be
regarded as holy; And before all the people I must be glorified.” This proves that God DOES
care how people worship him.
The Church I Attend
“My God doesn’t care what church I attend.” If this
were true, then why did Jesus tell his disciples in Mt. 16:18, (Matthew 16:18) “…on
this rock I will build My church…” He didn’t say churches, he said ‘church’ in the singular.
This means that there is only one church that worships God. The apostle Paul
supports this statement in 1 Corinthians 3:10-11, According
to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid
the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he
builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid,
which is Jesus Christ. This proves that God DOES care what church you attend.
Conclusion
There are other examples of how people change
scripture to support their own beliefs, but these will suffice for this
article. God states in Isa. 45:14, 21 that there is no other God besides him.
This is referring to God in the bible and His commands. To change His words to
suit your needs is worshipping another god; not God, The Father, of scripture.
